Ministers Twyford and Mahuta addressed Summit 2019 and participated in a Q + A session with attendees. The afternoon was given over to the ‘Outcomes Panel’ which focused on affirming positive housing outcomes delivered in our communities. This was followed by open discussion and questions from the floor.
During the open floor session support was expressed for the Board to continue driving the Kāinga Strategic Action Plan toward implementation by a range of entities.

Auckland Māori Housing Summit 2019 Report
The Auckland Māori Housing Summit 2019 was convened by the Independent Māori Statutory Board with the support of Te Matapihi, on 14 May. The summit brought together around 140 people from across the community of interest in housing outcomes for Māori including; mana whenua, marae and service providers, government Ministers and officials, and Auckland Council staff.
As a Māori-focused summit, the day revolved around the concept of Kāinga and the issues relating to whānau wellbeing in the context of Kāinga.
Government Housing Strategy
During the morning session the Minister and Associate Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Hon Phil Twyford and Hon Nanaia Mahuta, spoke about the government’s housing aspirations for Māori and their housing work programmes.
Summit 2019 Discussion
There was a Q and A with Ministers that following their keynote speeches and covered subjects from the design and allocation of funding and funding streams to challenging the government on their housing aspirations for rangatahi.
In the afternoon, discussion involved mana whenua, marae and service providers discussing their stories of success in improving housing outcomes for Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Launch of the Kāinga Strategic Action Plan
The Summit also included the launch of the Kāinga Strategic Action Plan – a plan that originated at the first Summit in 2018. More information on the plan is available here.
